Purpose

Updated: Apr 12, 2024

The word "purpose" is a big one and can be stressful. The thought of walking through life without knowing my purpose can be frustrating and raises many questions. None of us came into this world with a clear mission, and sometimes, even when we receive clear signs of our vocation, it's hard to recognize them.

Discovering our purpose is an intriguing journey; it's essentially our life's journey. The aspiration to be in a place where you feel deep significance, a feeling that you're moving in the right direction, is natural. To understand our direction, we need to ask ourselves questions: What motivates us? What topics or areas do we feel passionate about? What moves us? Once we understand which field is significant for us, we can begin to think about how to approach it and how we can provide service in that specific area. Here's an example: if someone is deeply concerned about environmental pollution and is passionate about environmental quality, they might find meaning and a desire to raise awareness about it. Once I've found a topic that excites me, I can incorporate it into every aspect of my life, thereby infusing it with meaning.

For me, purpose is the feeling that I'm doing something significant. When I engage in something meaningful and exciting, I approach even difficult tasks with enthusiasm and dedication because I see the bigger picture and understand that I'm contributing to something much larger and more important. Let me give you an example: you know that moment when you open a messy closet and think, "Wow, I don't even know what's in here anymore, I need to organize it," but you never get around to it... Then a friend moves to a new apartment, and you help her organize her closet perfectly. Suddenly, the task becomes enjoyable and easy because it has meaning—helping a friend, fostering friendship, and sharing a moment of togetherness. When we imbue an action with meaning, it becomes effortless.

Now, consider your work or your family life. As soon as you engage in a job that holds personal significance, you won't work another day in your life. Everything you do becomes pure pleasure, a series of experiences that open you up and elevate you each time.

A purpose, like our lives, is dynamic and can change throughout the course of our life cycles. We never stop learning and developing; every situation offers an opportunity for growth. The key is to ask ourselves the right questions and, most importantly, to take action—to leave the fear of failure behind and just go for it.
